The global impact of dementia


  • Around the world, there will be 9.9 million new cases of dementia in 2015, one every 3 seconds.
  • 46.8 million people worldwide are living with dementia in 2015.This number will almost double every 20 years.
  • In 2015, 58% of all people with dementia live in LMICs, rising to 63% in 2030 and 68% in 2050.

The Americas: 9.4 million people
Europe: 10.5 million people
Africa: 4 million people
Asia: 22.9 million people

We must now involve more countries and regions in the global action on dementia.

  • 131.5 people will be living with dementia by 2050, 68% in low and middle income countries.
  • Every 3 seconds, someone in the world develops dementia.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the 6th leading cause of death in the worlds. (Centers for Disease Control)
  • 30% of people with Alzheimer’s also have heart disease, and 29% also have diabetes. (Alzheimer’s Association)
  • Only 1-in-4 people with Alzheimer’s disease have been diagnosed. (Alzheimer’s Disease International)
  • 2-in-3 people with Alzheimer’s are women. (Alzheimer’s Association)
  • The cost of caring for Alzheimer’s patients in the U.S. is estimated to be $236 billion in 2016. (Alzheimer’s Association)
  • 2- in-3 people with Alzheimer’s are women. (Alzheimer’s Association)

According to Alzheimer's association and Centers for Disease Control, the exact number of people with Alzheimer disease are predicted by 2030 and 2050.
